Last weekend was an incredible weekend for educators around New Zealand with a multitude of free Professional Development Opportunities. I was able to take part in #educampdunners face to face; to skype into the livestream of #teachmeetnz; and follow virtually via twitter the Festival of Education in Auckland and Christchurch.
Nicki Tempero shared possibilities around the use of Twitter #kidsedchatnz as a connected part of your classroom literacy programme. #kidsedchatnz blogpost
Justine Driver’s Triblogging session at #teachmeetnz shared the findings of an inquiry resulting in a 36% increase in blog posts and 133% increase in comments through the connecting of three blogs. This is now moving into a habit of sharing learning.
Much of this learning is still accessible and rewindable through twitter. Twitter is a source of great Professional Development opportunities through the sharing within my personal learning network (PLN). I thoroughly recommend joining twitter and developing your own PLN to support you in your journey.
I have also been delving into the teaching as inquiry section in literacy online and found A student-led inquiry - Homai Primary School This resource is centred around a student-led chemistry inquiry with a specific focus on the development of metacognition through the teaching of writing. It is designed around the 4 phases of the inquiry cycle, capturing the voices of a group of students in action as they think, learn, and reflect upon their learning, with appropriate support and guidance from their teacher.

Sunday night's Seven Sharp featured Making Reading Cool. Mt Roskill Grammar students shared their success using the kiwi invented Booktrack.com, programme. Booktrack Classroom is an exciting new technology that synchronizes audio with text to create an immersive reading experience. Stories published with Booktrack include a customized, movie-style soundtrack that complements the story. Students can create Booktracks for their own writing and share them with their classmates.
